Composure: the quiet strength behind resilience
In the world of leadership, change and challenge, resilience is often praised as the skill that helps us rise. But what gives resilience its shape - what allows us to actually apply it in real-time - often comes down to one underrated quality:
Composure.
Composure is the ability to stay steady under pressure. It is what allows you to take a breath instead of snapping. To pause, consider and respond - rather than react from a place of panic, fear or frustration.
In our work with leaders and teams, we often say this:
’You don’t need to be unshakable or unbothered. Yet, you do need to know how to steady yourself when the pressure rises - because trust that it will rise 🫠’.
That is composure in action.
Why composure matters in resilience
Resilience is not just about bouncing back. It is about bouncing forward - learning, growing and showing up as your best self, especially when things are hard or uncertain.
Composure is what helps you access that ‘best self’ when everything around you feels unstable.
Whether you are facing team conflict, performance pressure, sudden change or personal overwhelm, your ability to regulate your emotional state determines how effectively you lead and live.
When you lose composure, it’s easy to:
Slip into unhelpful behaviours (defensiveness, blame, avoidance)
Escalate stress within your team or home
Miss opportunities for thoughtful, values-led action
But when you maintain composure, you create space to:
Think clearly under pressure
Lead with emotional intelligence
Model calm for others
Stay aligned with your long-term goals and values
Composure & emotional intelligence: what is the link?
At its core, composure is a reflection of emotional intelligence (EI)—particularly two key dimensions:
Self-awareness – the ability to notice your emotional triggers and physical signs of stress (tight jaw, racing thoughts, closed body language).
Self-regulation – the skill of managing your reactions in the moment, so you can stay intentional rather than reactive.
The most resilient and respected leaders we know aren’t those who never feel frustrated or anxious. They are the ones who have learned how to notice those feelings, name them and navigate them with intention.
That is composure.
That is emotional intelligence.
And that is what earns you trust and respect - especially in tough moments.
How do you rate on this skill?
Composure isn’t just a ‘nice to have’ soft skill, it’s a critical part of how you build trust, lead through change and care for yourself and others.
But most people have never actually measured how strong their emotional intelligence is.
That is why we always recommend doing an evidence-based self-assessment like the EQ-i 2.0 or one we give during our training sessions.
It gives you powerful insight into how you:
Handle stress
Make decisions under pressure
Express emotions appropriately
Build and maintain relationships
Bounce back from setbacks
Knowing where you stand helps you grow with intention. Because you can’t improve what you don’t understand.
Composure in action: a daily practice
Here are a few simple questions to help you build more composure in your day-to-day:
What situations tend to trigger strong emotional reactions in me?
How do I typically respond in high-pressure moments, and how do I want to respond?
What’s one physical signal my body gives me when I’m losing composure?
What is one calming habit I can practise (like breathwork, visualisation, or stepping away) to recenter?
Remember, resilience isn’t about pushing through everything. It’s about knowing how to regulate yourself so you can respond with intention.
And composure?
That’s your anchor.
Final thoughts
The world doesn’t need more leaders who are constantly ‘on’ or pretending to be unbothered.
It needs leaders who are real, emotionally intelligent and equipped with the tools to stay present, grounded, and values-driven -even when it’s tough.
Composure won’t make the stress go away. But it will help you lead through it without losing yourself.
If you are curious to explore how emotionally intelligent you are - or how to build composure in yourself or your team - we would love to support you.
